SITUATIONAL UPDATE INFLUENZA A (H1N1) - FOUR NEW CASES OF INFLUENZA A (H1N1) CONFIRMED IN BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

The Ministry of Health of Brunei Darussalam confirmed four new cases of Influenza A (H1N1) today, bringing the total number to six cases. All of these cases are Brunei citizens.

The third case is an 18-year old male who was one of the contacts of the first case reported previously. The patient started to develop symptoms on 21 June 2009.

The fourth case is a 20-year old male studying in the United Kingdom. This patient returned to Brunei on 18 June 2009 and developed symptoms on 21 June 2009.

The fifth case is a 13-year old female who went on holiday with her family to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 16 June 2009. All family members were having symptoms when they arrived back in the country on 19 June 2009. The sixth case is a brother of the fifth case, aged 11 years, who was also travelling in the group.

All the cases are currently undergoing treatment at the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Hospital, Tutong and are in good conditions. The Ministry of Health is currently tracing all contacts and will quarantine those at risk.

Following the increase in the number of Influenza A (H1N1) cases, the Ministry of Health continues to advise the public not to be alarmed and worried. The public are also required to cooperate and comply with the following health advices:

To avoid or delay travel to affected areas.

To seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms following travel from affected areas.

To reduce social activities and interactions for seven days after returning from overseas.

To take precautions by practicing good personal hygiene, especially when visiting other countries.
