Xi Jinping Meets with President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea (ROK)

On June 27, 2019 local time, President Xi Jinping met with President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea (ROK) in Osaka, Japan.

Xi Jinping pointed out that it is in accordance with the trend of history to enhance China-ROK friendly cooperation, which also answers to the common calls of the two peoples. The Chinese side is willing to work with the ROK side to stick to treating each other with sincerity, strive to achieve win-win cooperation, push ahead the continuous development of bilateral relations, and make contributions to the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and the region. The two sides need to maintain communication at all levels and hold firmly the general direction of bilateral relations. China and the ROK should seize the opportunity of jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative, accelerate the second-stage negotiations on a China-ROK free trade agreement, and continue to expand cooperation in such fields as trade, science and technology, finance and economy, as well as environment protection. The two countries should also actively carry out people-to-people and cultural exchanges to consolidate friendship between the two peoples. China-ROK cooperation has been completely mutually beneficial with win-win outcomes, and should therefore not be affected by external pressure. Xi Jinping hoped that the ROK side will continue to attach importance to and properly address relevant issues between the two countries. The two sides should boost coordination within multilateral frameworks including the United Nations and the G20, jointly oppose protectionism, support multilateralism and free trade system, and push for building an open world economy.

Moon Jae-in expressed that under the joint guidance of President Xi Jinping and me, ROK-China relations have witnessed sound development momentum. The ROK side is willing to strengthen high-level exchanges with the Chinese side, advance dialogue and cooperation in various fields, complete the second-stage negotiations on a ROK-China free trade agreement at an early date and lift bilateral relations to a new level. The ROK side stands ready to jointly build the Belt and Road Initiative with the Chinese side and cooperate in expanding third-party markets. The ROK side is willing to work with the Chinese side in safeguarding multilateralism, free trade and an open world economy, which concerns the ROK's national interests.

The two heads of state also exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula situation. Xi Jinping noted that I paid a state visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) last week upon invitation and exchanged in-depth views with Chairman Kim Jong Un on China-DPRK relations and the Korean Peninsula situation. Judging from my visit to the DPRK and the recent situation on various sides, the general trend toward de-escalation and dialogue remains unchanged on the Peninsula, and a political settlement remains an optimal option of all sides. Facts have proven that the only way to solving the Korean Peninsula issue is to resolve their respective legitimate concerns step by step through dialogue and consultation with a phased and synchronized approach. The two sides should increase efforts to promote peace talks and undertake relevant work in the next step. The Chinese side supports leaders of the DPRK and the United States to hold a new round of meeting and hopes that they will show flexibility and strive for progress. The direction of denuclearization should be preserved on the Korean Peninsula, while the DPRK's legitimate concerns should be noticed and responded. Moon Jae-in expressed that President Xi Jinping's visit to the DPRK a couple of days ago played a constructive role in facilitating dialogue and safeguarding peace and stability on the Peninsula, and made important contributions. The ROK side highly appreciates such efforts. The ROK side will continue to endeavor to improve relations between the ROK and the DPRK and enhance cooperation with the Chinese side, so as to make contributions to realizing the denuclearization goal and lasting peace and stability.

Ding Xuexiang, Liu He, Yang Jiechi, Wang Yi, He Lifeng and others attended the meeting.
