Saturday, July 5, 2008 CASES of domestic violence in the country have risen in recent years by 264 per cent, from 81 cases in 2000 to 214 in 2007, according to statistics from the Community Development Department. Imams quoting the statistics yesterday pointed out that out of the 214 cases reported last year, 147 were from abuse towards wives and 27 were from abuse towards children. They added that domestic violence causes personal problems and is normally hidden away from public knowledge as victims are typically embarrassed to say anything and insist on it being too personal to share. In the sermon yesterday, it was pointed out that authorities on various levels have a role in combating the issue of domestic violence. If the issue is not addressed, it would have negative effects on its victims such as emotional stress and neglect. Family members, neighbours and the surrounding community were advised to act quickly when they get to know of domestic violence occurring in their vicinity through giving advice, which would demonstrate their caring attitudes. If necessary, they could also report the deed to the authorities. Given a father's role in the family as the provider and protector, and the mother's role as caretaker, playing their respective parts and successfully executing their responsibilities as members of their families would avoid conflicts such as misunderstandings, neglect, quarrels and worst of all, violence. Imams yesterday quoted research which showed that domestic violence stems from influences and factors such as personal experiences, those of their families, friends and general public, as well as the environment. Some individuals resort to violence because of stress which sees them lashing out their emotions and feelings of depression, anger and dissatisfaction to their wives, children and other members of the family. They also reminded that marriages should be made through love, respect, consideration and responsibility which will later on result in a family that is happy and harmonious.
