Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Yu Hong at the Book Donation Ceremony at Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College
2021/06/14

Hjh Susilawati binti DP Hj Muhammad, Principal of Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College,

Deputy Principals and distinguished guests, good morning!

It’s my pleasure to visit Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College. Your school boasts a long history and a large number of prominent alumni, with a high reputation in Brunei. On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Brunei, we donate 202 books which cover different aspects of China's development such as economy, science and technology, literature, art, tourism and so on. I believe that these books here will help teachers and students of the school to gain a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of China.

China is both ancient and modern, with a splendid history of civilization as well as strong scientific and technological strength. In recent years, the level of scientific research and education has developed rapidly, and China has made remarkable achievements. In June this year, Nature Index released the latest ranking of the research strength of the world's universities and academic institutions, and “the Chinese Academy of Sciences holds a seemingly unassailable lead with a share of 1886.71, more than twice that of its nearest competitor with 927.26” according to the Index. Nature Index wrote in its assessment of China's technological prowess that “China's successes in space exploration, quantum technologies and cutting-edge chemistry underline its superpower status in research”.

China's technological prowess can also be seen in the development of the COVID-19 vaccine. At present, seven vaccines of three technical routes have received conditional market approval for public use or emergency use authorization in China. Among the six types of vaccines that the World Health Organization (WHO) has listed for emergency use so far, two are from China, namely Sinopharm and Sinovac. According to the newly released Times Higher Education 2021, five of the top 10 universities in Asia are from China. Among them, Tsinghua University and Peking University ranked top two, with Tsinghua University ranking first for three consecutive years.

Dear teachers and students, the prestigious Chinese Government Scholarships are provided to Bruneian students every year, the enrollment information is usually announced on Borneo Bulletin and the website of the Embassy at the end of each year. We welcome Bruneian students to study in China and hope that students who intend to study in China could start learning Chinese early on.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Brunei. The exchanges between our two countries enjoy a long history and have stood the test of time.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, China and Brunei have extended sympathy and support to each other, and written a new chapter in our joint fight against the epidemic. Earlier this year, amid a severe global vaccine shortage, China donated 52,000 doses of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine to Brunei, which was welcomed by the people of Brunei and has contributed to Brunei's vaccination program.

Bilateral trade volume in 2020 grew by 72.5% year on year, ranking first among ASEAN countries. From January to April this year, bilateral trade volume reached 830 million US dollars, up 38.7% year on year. China’s investment in Brunei covers a multitude of areas, which have not only contributed to the extension of oil and gas downstream industries, improved port operation efficiency, and increased local employment, but also contributed to Brunei’s efforts in economic diversification, digital Brunei, and healthy Brunei.

Dear friends, the friendship between China and Brunei needs to be carried forward from generation to generation. I sincerely hope that young Bruneian students become the successors and inheritors of the mutually beneficial friendly cooperation between our two countries. The Chinese Embassy stands ready to continue working together with all of you.

Thank you.
