Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Yu Hong at the Book Donation Ceremony at Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah School

Dear Mr.Mohd Fliti, CEO of Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah School,

Dear Principal and distinguished guests, good afternoon!

It’s my pleasure to visit Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah School today. On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Brunei, we donate 202 books to the school, which cover different aspects of China's development such as economy, science and technology, literature, art, tourism and so on. China has been making positive progress in education, science and technology with increasing research ability and R&D input. World-renowned achievements have been made in major scientific research projects such as the successful launch of the core module Tianhe into space, the successful Mars landing of Tianwen-1, and the accomplished mission of the Chang'e-5 lunar probe, as well as the Beidou Navigation Satellite System, deep-sea manned submersible and quantum computers. I believe that these books here will help teachers and students of the school to have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of China.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Brunei. The two countries have not only a long history of friendly exchanges but also close practical cooperation. Over the past 30 years, bilateral relations have developed constantly and stood the test of time. During President Xi Jinping's visit to Brunei in 2018, bilateral relations were upgraded to Strategic Cooperative Partnership. His Majesty has visited China or attended international conferences in China for 12 times. The two heads of state have charted the course for the development of bilateral relations from a strategic perspective.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, China and Brunei have extended sympathy and support to each other, and written a new chapter in our joint fight against the epidemic. Earlier this year, amid a severe global vaccine shortage, China donated 52,000 doses of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine to Brunei, which was welcomed by the people of Brunei and has contributed to Brunei's vaccination program.

The past 30 years have witnessed deepening cooperation and closer ties between our two countries. The two sides signed the MOU on the Belt and Road Cooperation and the Cooperation Plan. Bilateral economic and trade volume increased from US $719 million in 2016 to US $1.91 billion in 2020. In particular, bilateral trade volume grew 72.5% year on year, ranking first among ASEAN countries. From January to April this year, bilateral trade volume reached 830 million US dollars, up 38.7% year on year. China’s investment in Brunei covers a multitude of areas, which have not only contributed to the expansion of oil and gas downstream industries, improved port operation efficiency, and increased local employment, but also contributed to Brunei’s efforts in economic diversification, digital Brunei, and healthy Brunei. Notably, China-Brunei joint venture Hengyi Industrial has been actively working with Ministry of Education of Brunei to cultivate talents in the field of petrochemicals, with the cooperation mode of joint educational program between universities and enterprises of the two countries, providing students who wish to contribute to the economic diversification of Brunei with prime opportunities to fully tap into their talents.

I was deeply impressed by the performance of your students when I attended the Hari Raya celebration at ICC two weeks ago. Since its establishment, Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah School has been providing high quality education to the community and serving the aspiration of Wawasan 2035. The school attaches great importance to helping students broaden their horizons and increase their knowledge. China is the largest country in Asia, and I hope that Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah School may list China as the destination for study-tours when the pandemic ends. The Embassy also stands ready to support Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah School’s exchanges with schools in China, to enhance mutual understanding between the younger generations of our two countries and pass on the China-Brunei friendship from generation to generation.

Thank you.
