Chinese Ambassador Yu Hong Met with Two Bruneian Ministers and Attended Nanjing Anti-epidemic Materials Contribution Ceremony

On 4 April 2020, H.E. Ms. Yu Hong met with Pehin Abu Bakar, Minister of Home Affairs and Dato Dr. Haji Isham, Minister of Health of Brunei Darussalam to exchange views on strengthening cooperation in prevention of and joint responding to COVID-19. Ambassador Yu Hong forwarded a letter from Mme Han Liming, Mayor of Nanjing, Jiangsu Province of China, to Minister Pehin Abu Bakar, and then attended the handover ceremony of anti-epidemic materials from Nanjing to Brunei.

Ambassador Yu Hong commended that, since the COVID-19 outbreak in Brunei, the Bruneian government has taken a series of resolute measures, with strong support from all sectors of society, to strengthen the prevention and control of the epidemic and achieved positive results. China’s current domestic situation is generally stable, and is in an orderly manner to promote the resumption of work and production. At present, China’s main task is to guard against imported cases and a rebound in indigenous cases as it’s under heavy pressure against the global spread of the epidemic. The outbreak of the epidemic once again shows that all countries share the same future and must jointly cooperate in fighting against the epidemic. China firmly supports Brunei in combating the epidemic and will continue to provide support, to the best of its ability, to Brunei according to its need, to jointly tide over the difficulties.

Ambassador Yu Hong said that the friendship between China and Brunei has a long history. The city of Nanjing witnessed not only the profound friendship between the two countries, but also the friendly exchanges between them through the maritime silk road. During the state visit taken by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Brunei in 2018, the sister cities agreement was renewed under the witnesses by the leaders of the two countries. With the joint efforts from both sides, Nanjing and Bandar Seri Begawan will further strengthen the cooperation in various fields, with frequent people-to-people exchanges and deepening friendship. Last year, Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam visited Nanjing to further promote the friendship between the two countries. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, a total of 93 people among 8.43 million population in Nanjing were confirmed the infection, which was at a very low rate and all confirmed patients have recovered and discharged from the hospital due to effective and strong measures and careful treatment taken by the government. Nanjing is very concerned about the situation in Brunei and the its Mayor Mme. Han Liming wrote the letter to Minister Pehin Abu Bakar, expressing that Nanjing government and its people feel empathy and would like to extend their sincere support to Brunei. Nanjing Chemical Construction Co., Ltd. and NJNCC (B) Sdn Bhd participated in the construction of Hengyi PMB project, which is a China-Brunei cooperation project, and have friendly feelings towards Brunei and its people. And this time Nanjing government and the companies urgently raised a batch of anti-epidemic materials for contribution, hoping to join Brunei’s efforts to fight against the epidemic. It is believed that with the concerted efforts from the Government and people of Brunei, the outbreak will be overcome soon.

The two ministers extended their sincere appreciation and thanks to China for the contribution. Minister Pehin Abu Bakar said that the Chinese government and its people have given active support to Brunei since the outbreak in the sultanate. Bandar Seri Begawan and Nanjing have been sister cities since 2011, and their friendly exchanges is getting more and more extensive. He expressed his gratitude to Mayor Han Liming for the letter and mentioned that the contribution reflects Nanjing’s friendly feeling for Brunei. He also wished to push forward the development of the relations between the two sister cities with more visits and exchanges. Minister Dato Isham said that, as a result of timely measures, Brunei is able to effectively control the spread of the epidemic. Brunei thanks China for the support and assistance rendered and is willing to maintain communication with China to jointly combat the epidemic.

The anti-epidemic materials contributed by the Government of Nanjing Municipal People’s Government, Nanjing Chemical Construction Co., Ltd. and NJNCC (B) Sdn Bhd to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Health of Brunei Darussalam include 51,000 disposable surgical masks, 10,000 pairs of disposable inspection gloves and 1000 pieces of medical protective clothing.
